Our Research

Research grounded in community participation to shape policy and rebuild the promise to Australians.

AMPLIFY’s research examines the social and economic challenges shaping Australia. Through evidence-based approaches and direct public participation, we identify what Australians value and what’s needed to rebuild the promise — while we still can.

By engaging people directly in complex issues, we cut through the noise to understand what genuinely matters and where change is most needed.

Guided by an independent Research Committee, we use participatory and deliberative tools to ensure community voices meaningfully shape our work.

Our research gives communities insight into Australia’s biggest challenges and a genuine role in shaping solutions, and provides policymakers, institutions and industry with practical guidance that strengthens decision-making and helps rebuild the promise to Australians.

AMPLIFY Insights

AMPLIFY Insights uses traditional research methods to build our understanding what Australians care about most, and how they see the nation’s biggest challenges.

The results give insight into the national mood, bridging the gap between governments and the communities they represent.

PAST PROJECTS: new methods

Curtin trial on tax reform

Our first test of generative polling was designed to get a deeper understanding of how people think Using an AI-enabled generative polling tool we took 112 participants from the West Australian electorate of Curtin through a structured, text-based conversations about housing taxes like negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount. Participants answered open and closed questions in their own words and then evaluated one another’s responses, with the tool using machine learning to cluster, summarise, and quantify the ideas that resonate most strongly across the group.

The results showed us not only what people thought but gave insight into why people thought it. We’ve learnt some important lessons from this first test, and are using these learnings to build our research methods further.

PAST PROJECTS

Housing AMPLIFICATION

In early 2025 we brought 100 Australians — left and right, young and old, renters and homeowners — into one room. Over three days they didn’t just talk. They debated fiercely, listened deeply, and reached real consensus on solutions to this crisis.

The intergenerational divide

36 participants from Toowoomba, Queensland took part in a full-day investigation into what divides and connects Australia’s generations. Through structured dialogue, expert input, data exploration, and creative exercises, participants stress-tested their assumptions and examined the realities of the “generational contract”, pinpointing both shared values and clear points of tension around housing, climate, tax, and opportunity.

The findings offer concrete pathways for narrowing generational divides: clearer communication across age groups, more opportunities for real-world intergenerational contact, and a stronger focus on the common ground that already exists. The session provides an early blueprint for how communities can hold rigorous, honest, and constructive conversations about complex issues.

Rebuilding trust

21 participants from Box Hill, Victoria participated in a facilitated conversation on strengthening trust in government. Guided by a series of discussions and activities (including a Q&A with independent MP Helen Haines and Senator David Pocock) participants explored what trust in government means, why it’s eroded, and what it will take to restore it.

Through honest dialogue and structured exercises, the group surfaced the priorities and practical ideas that matter most to people on the ground: greater transparency in decision-making, more civil behaviour in parliament, clearer communication, tighter controls on lobbying, and more meaningful community engagement.
