Australians want bigger and bolder action on housing, with new polling revealing it is a top policy priority for the nation.
The AMPLIFY poll, completed by YouGov, found 24 per cent of Australians ranked housing as the number one policy area they want the Federal Government to take big and bold steps to address.
AMPLIFY CEO Georgina Harrisson said the poll results reflected the urgent need for innovative and progressive policy following decades of stagnation.
“It’s unsurprising to see Aussies want bigger and bolder action on housing. There’s been a lack of ambition in national housing for the past three decades, which has led to the housing crisis we’re facing today,” she said.
Most Aussies (61 per cent) believe affordability is the biggest housing challenge in their communities.
When it comes to solutions, 70 per cent of respondents supported expanding the use of prefab housing.
A majority - 57 per cent - also support changes to planning rules to build more homes near public transport and urban centres, allowing for higher-density development in the areas people want to live.
“A lack of housing supply is at the core of the crisis. We need more homes to meet the demands of our growing population,” Ms Harrisson said.
“The Federal Government has a target to build 1.2 million new homes by 2029, but they won’t meet this target without serious and meaningful changes to building and planning regulations.
“Prefab housing and a shake-up of planning rules are two ways we can get more homes built more quickly. These are kind of bold reforms we’re calling on governments to pursue.”
