Thursday 28 May 2026 – AMPLIFY CEO Georgina Harrisson has welcomed the Federal Government’s investment in Modern Methods of Construction and its new bid to cut housing red tape, calling it a clear win for community advocacy.
The $39.3 million investment to expand “kit-of-parts” construction nationally and a renewed focus on reducing construction costs and barriers responds to community-backed housing reforms AMPLIFY has championed.
“AMPLIFY has advocated for MMC and action to cut red tape, and the Federal Government deserves credit for these announcements,” Ms Harrisson said.
“This is a win for community advocacy and for getting more homes built, faster. Our research shows Australians overwhelmingly back MMC, with two in three in support. And our modelling shows modular could deliver up to 20,000 extra homes a year, in half the time. It’s a game changer at scale and that has to be the ambition.”
Ms Harrisson also welcomed the Government’s Productivity Commission inquiry into housing regulation. Coordinating this activity, including the review of the National Construction Code and other initiatives, will be key to unlocking supply.
“Cutting red tape is how we get homes built faster. Together with the Productivity Commission's recent findings on declining construction productivity and regulatory costs, this inquiry must give all Australian governments undeniable evidence to overhaul the planning and building rules that are slowing home building,” she said.
“We are encouraged by the urgency around the inquiry, with an interim report by July and encourage the Government to pursue material and widely supported changes as early as possible to not delay their implementation.
“While there’s more work to do to turn reform into real homes, these housing measures are a step in the right direction.”
Both reforms go to the heart of AMPLIFY’s housing policy, informed by the views of 18,000 Australians in the largest community engagement on housing ever undertaken in Australia.
AMPLIFY will continue engaging with the community, governments and stakeholders to push for faster adoption of MMC and to keep the focus on building more homes, more quickly.
